MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 22

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV

This play, as well as our other play for today, features a pair of teams with solid offenses. In Minnesota, we’ll see two offenses in the top ten of runs scored. As a result, this comes as tail of the pitching matchup.

In the top half of the first, we’ll see Bailey Ober. He’s allowed three or less earned runs in each of his last five starts. That’s dropped his season long ERA by a full point. More impressively, he’s racked up 41 strikeouts in those five games (8.2 per game). The Phillies are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to strikeouts on the road. So even if Ober finds some early trouble, I like his chance to pitch out of it with some strikeouts.

In the bottom half of the first, Ranger Suarez will look to find him footing again. He’s had a couple of rough starts in a row, but his season has largely been a big success. He carries a 2.76 ERA into Monday’s action with a 1.04 WHIP. In addition to that, he is getting to throw to an offense that has been on a downward trend. The Twins have scored just 18 runs in their last five games (3.6 runs per game). That seems like the right trend for Suarez to get back to business against.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 22: No (-105)

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – MLB TV

Once again, we have another solid offense with the Diamondbacks. They rank in the top ten in runs scored on the year. However, I like the to have troubles here for two reasons. Firstly, they scored just six runs in the three-game series with the Cubs. Secondly, they also have to face Cole Ragans. He’s coming off of two straight outings before the All-Star Game where he went 7.0 innings. In each contest he allowed two or less runs. You can add in a scoreless inning during the mid-summer classic as well as a reason why Arizona will go scoreless in the first here.

Taking our second NRFI home for us is lesser known pitcher Yilber Diaz. The 23-year old righty has just two starts in his whole career, but has shown some promise in that span. He tallied 12.0 innings in that span and has allowed just two earned runs in that span. Some of that is because he’s shown good control and an ability to limit walks. Kansas City ranks 28th in the league in walks, so that should help him keep people off the bases even more and help us round this one out.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 22: No (-115)
