MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 29
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Baltimore Orioles
First Pitch – 3:05 pm EST
Camden Yard – Baltimore, Maryland
Broadcast – MLB TV
In game one of this twin bill we’ll see new Oriole Zach Eflin try to get our NRFI started right. He had begun to look a bit sharper down the stretch, picking up his ground ball rate a touch en route to limiting two of his last three opponents to two runs or less. Oddly enough, one of those recent starts (his last one) came against these same Blue Jays when he was still with Tampa Bay. He held them to two runs over 5.2 innings. The Blue Jays are ranked 25th in run scoring this year, so I don’t expect them to come out and make his life much more tough the second time.
To wrap up this NRFI, Yariel Rodriguez will have to limit one of the best offenses in baseball. However, he has a couple things working for him here. The first is that the Orioles are quite a bit worse early in the game. They rank 16th in MLB in first inning runs, which is way below their game averages. Secondly, Rodriguez is hot – having not allowed more than two runs in any of his last four starts. That should be enough for us to get this one across the finish line.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 29: No (-110)
Minnesota Twins vs. New York Mets
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first, we have another potent offense in Minnesota that doesn’t score well in the first inning. They rank just 14th in the league in first inning scoring and, maybe surprisingly, Jose Quintana is someone who should be able to take advantage of that. He’s held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in six of his last seven starts. There sees to be a resurgence here and I think it should carry him through the first inning at minimum.
On the other side, the Mets offfense has been pretty slow. They scored just 12 runs in a four-game set with the Braves and that includes one eight run outburst. Now they’ll have to deal with Simeon Woods Richardson who has been great. He’s kept his opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last three contests. That span includes a 6.0 inning outing with no earned runs against the hot hitting Phillies. If we need one more reason, the Mets are also not great in the first inning – they rank 26th in the majors.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 29: No (-115)
