MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 30

Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top half of the first in this game, Griffin Canning takes to the hill to try to limit this Rockies team and get our NRFI started right. While his 3-10 record might not instill confidence, he’s looked a touch better over his last few games. He recently held the Mariners to just one run over 5.0 innings – adding in 6 strikeouts.

He also will have the benefit of facing the Rockies, who have been particularly rough at the plate lately. After scoring 20 runs in a game against the Red Sox, they scored just nine runs in a four-game series with the Giants. More importantly, they are a team that doesn’t walk much. When Canning has gotten into trouble, it’s because of walks and the Rockies rank 24th in the league in drawing them. As a result, I think Canning gets us through the first three outs.

In the bottom of the inning, I have a bit more faith in the arm of Cal Quantrill. He’s held three of his last four opponents to three earned runs or less. While he hasn’t come close to the 1.71 ERA he had in May, his first inning self has been that good. In the last six starts, dating back a month and a half, he hasn’t allowed a first inning run. The 26th ranked Angels offense shouldn’t turn that trend around.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 30: No (-120)

Washington Nationals vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, Arizona
Broadcast – ESPN+

If you’re familiar with this column, you know I usually comb the slate of games and find a couple of good pitchers (or at least bad offenses) and get in on the NRFIs. However, when I looked at this slate of games there was nothing I liked more than this YRFI.

For one, the Nationals send out Patrick Corbin. The Nationals lefty is posting his lowest monthly ERA in a calendar year, but it’s still a whopping 4.31. In addition, he faces the 3rd ranked Diamondbacks’ offense, who is scoring 7.67 runs per game over their last three. They also put up a nine-spot on Monday, which gives me all the confidence that this one gets settled in the top of the inning.

Even if it doesn, I like the Nationals’ bats here too. They’ve scored 35 runs over their last four games (8.75 per game). Ryne Nelson has been pretty solid this month, but has allowed three or more earned runs in two of his last three starts. He’s also posting about half of his games with half of the batters hitting home runs. That’s a dangerous game to play and one he hasn’t been punished for all that much. While I don’t think we’ll need him to concede one here, I do thing it’s a nice back-up option should his offense come up short in the first.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 30: Yes (-140)
