MoDOT adding travel-safe zones to U.S. 63 near West Plains

WEST PLAINS, Mo. (KY3) — MoDOT is adding two new travel-safe zones in Missouri.

MoDOT has previously placed these in the St. Louis area. However, officials decided to add new zones in Howell and Oregon Counties along U.S. 63.

These five-mile travel-safe zones are positioned in areas that have seen a high number of fatality crashes. Over the next year, drivers traveling on U.S. 63 between West Plains and the Arkansas state line will move through these travel-safe zones.

In addition to warning drivers about the area, expect an increased presence of law enforcement. Sergeant Eddie Young with Missouri State Highway Patrol says if drivers are pulled over and given a ticket, they should expect that fine to be doubled.

“Identified areas are going to have double fines for moving violations in a hope to create more deterrence to give people more of an incentive to pay attention to the active duty of driving down the roadway,” said Sgt. Eddie Young of the Missouri Highway Patrol. “And being prepared for those events that could cause someone to lead to a crash.”

The travel-safe zones started on Monday.
