Mom and sons use 100-year-old recipe to start family business

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. — Two brothers from Birmingham, Michigan convinced their mom that a 100-year-old recipe for cinnamon-chocolate chip cookies should become a family business and that’s exactly what happened.

Elaine Surnow and her sons, Max and Sam started Cooper Street Cookies in 2011.

The company continues to grow, but also gives back to organizations such as Make a Wish Michigan, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, and other non-profits.

Some of the fan favorites include the original Cinnamon-Chocolate Chip Twice-Baked Cookies, Cherry White Chip, other varieties and three flavors of Granola Bakes.

They can be found in a variety of Michigan-area stores and online.

Company representatives tell Mid-Michigan NOW the products are low-calorie and made with all natural ingredients.

“We do source all of our fruits from Michigan — our cherries, our blueberries, our cranberries. We even source some of our other ingredients, natural ingredients are also from Michigan. We really try to support our Michigan-based companies that provide ingredients that we can use that make it a better made for you cookie,” said Michele Tinsey, Cooper Street Cookies.

The company is Michigan-based, but does not have a physical storefront.

Cooper Street Cookies products can be bought at stores throughout Michigan and online at www.cooperstreet.com.
