Mookie Betts relived bizarre World Series incident with Yankees fans: When a pair of Yankees fans interfered with Mookie Betts trying to make a grab in Game 4 of the World Series, the Red Sox turned Dodgers star took a more diplomatic approach in the aftermath of the incident.
Two months later, Betts seemed to share his true feelings over the incident. Betts was pretty blunt when asked what his message would be to those two Yankees fans during an appearance on Peacock’s “2024 Back That Year Up” with Kevin Hart and Keenan Thompson.
“I would really say [expletive] you guys,” Betts said. “[Expletive] you guys.”
Betts elaborated a little more after getting an applause and a laugh from the studio audience.
“Trying to get the ball, cool. But like, you tried to grab my [expletive],” Betts said. “Like, you trying to take the glove and [expletive]. I didn’t even feel the dude grab my arm. I was in the moment.”
In the first inning of Game 4, Betts ran toward the seats along the right field line at Yankees Stadium to try and catch a fly ball hit by Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres. Betts reached up to make the grab, but he was greeted by one fan trying to rip the ball out of his glove and another fan yanking on his right wrist.
Torres was called out due to fan interference and the two fans were ejected from Game 4. There was also a brief moment where Betts thought about getting retaliation.
“I thought about throwing the ball at him,” Betts said. “Then I realized, Mookie, you ain’t gonna [expletive]. Yeah, you ain’t gonna do [expletive]. Go back to right field.”
Hart teased Betts for the sound he made over the on-field mic when he made the grab. Betts laughed over it, but was also happy that justice prevailed in that moment.
“Hey man, look, it worked,” Betts said. “That’s all that mattered. He was out. That out was important, guys. That out was important.”
That incident actually occurred in the one game the Dodgers lost in the World Series, dropping Game 4 before clinching the title in Game 5. In between those two games, Betts brushed the side incident at the time.
“When it comes to the person in play, it doesn’t matter,” Betts told reporters after Game 4. “We lost. It’s irrelevant. I’m fine. He’s fine. Everything’s cool. We lost the game and that’s what I’m kind of focused on. We got to turn the page and get ready for tomorrow.”
The two Yankees fans, who were season-ticket holders, were barred from attending Game 5. Following the Dodgers’ win in Game 5, Betts opened up his feelings a bit more about the incident, telling former teammate David Ortiz that he “wanted to fight” the fans in an interview on Fox Sports.
Trivia: With his third World Series win, no active player has won more titles than Betts. Who are the four other former Red Sox players to win that many titles since 2000?
(Hint: Two of them were pitchers and the third one didn’t win one of his three titles with the Red Sox).

Luka Doncic out at least a month
The Mavericks, who the Celtics defeated in the 2024 NBA Finals, will be without their top star for a bit. Luka Doncic has been ruled out for the next month due to a calf injury he suffered in the Mavericks’ Christmas Day loss to the Timberwolves, ESPN reported.
Doncic is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game this season for a Dallas team that is fourth in the Western Conference standings. With the injury, Doncic could miss the Mavericks’ for matchup against the Celtics on Jan. 25.
Jim Harbaugh not concerned about Chargers playing in Foxborough weather
Ahead of Saturday’s game against the Patriots, Jim Harbaugh was asked if the was any concern about his Chargers team possibly acclimating to the colder weather in New Enlgnad. The Chargers coach gave a pretty on-brand answer for him.
“These guys are young, they’re healthy, and their heart pumps warm blood. It pumps it from the arteries to the veins to the tributaries to the capillaries. Throughout their whole body. You just play ball.
“Now I might’ve gotten that in the wrong order there. It’s well documented, I’m not a doctor.”
It won’t be too cold for Saturday’s game. The high during the day is expected to be at 41 degrees with it being mostly cloudy.
Daily highlight
Four of the NBA’s games on Thursday were determined in the final 10 seconds. Jordan Poole hit a game-winning 3-pointer to help the Wizards beat the Pistons. Tyler Herro drained a shot with a half-second left to give the Heat the win over the Magic. Scoot Henderson made a turnaround jumper with a tenth of a second remaining that won the Trail Blazers the game over the Jazz.
But the craziest finish came in the Pistons-Kings game. Trailing by three in the final seconds, Jaden Ivey was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer. Ivey’s shot went in and he converted on the four-point play that gave Detroit the last-second win.
On this day
Twenty-one years ago on Friday, the Patriots ended the 2003 regular season the opposite way they began it. They took down the Bills, 31-0, after they had beaten them by the same score in the opener.
New England got out to a quick start in the shutout win, with Tom Brady throwing for four touchdowns in the first half. After Adam Vinatieri gave them a 31-0 lead in the fourth quarter, New England’s shutout bid nearly ended when Travis Brown replaced Drew Bledsoe at quarterback for Buffalo. But Patriots linebacker Larry Izzo intercepted Brown’s pass in the end zone in the final minutes, securing the shutout win for the Patriots.
That win improved the Patriots’ record to 14-2 for the 2003 regular season, giving them home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs. Just over a month later, New England won its second Super Bowl.
