More than 60 jobs up for grabs within Tuscaloosa City School District

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) –The Tuscaloosa City School District is looking to fill more than 60 jobs. District leaders held a job fair Thursday at Central High School where some of the applicants were offered positions on the spot.

Leaders say this is the norm every year and the reason is because it’s a mix of retirements and people moving on to other jobs.

Anna Kathryn Bonner is looking to become a substitute within the Tuscaloosa City School District with the hope it will lead to a full time position at some point.

“There are a lot of different schools here so I am excited to ask questions and learn more,” said Bonner.

And Bonner’s not alone. Djuania Simmons also wants to help fill a void.

“They need some assistance in the classroom, so I have some available days I can come and assist with that,” said Simmons.

That’s the very thing Dr. Deron Cameron, Tuscaloosa City School District Assistant Superintendent, wanted to hear. He’s got 65 jobs to fill ranging from school teachers, aides, custodians to school bus drivers.

“We hope from this jobs fair we cut it down. We have a board meeting Tuesday night and we’d like to fill all 65 Tuesday night, so that’s our goal for today,” said Dr. Cameron.

Realistically Dr. Cameron would be happy with hiring at least half of that amount.

“And then we’ll have another board meeting right after that as well so we want to finish the other half as well but if we could do half, it would be fantastic for us,” said Dr. Cameron.

In terms of teacher openings, Dr. Cameron says the Tuscaloosa City School District has around 22 openings.
