Mountain biking, martial arts are among other new sports at Minot State this fall

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – Wheelchair basketball, mountain biking and archery are some of the new sports coming to the Minot State Sports program this fall, thanks to a grant secured by professors Ruth Chen and Kelsey Higginson.

Last week, the program kicked off with wheelchair basketball.

Each month will involve a different sport highlighting a specific international event. Martial arts and flag football are some of the other sports to look forward to.

Professor Chen said this encourages students to go outside their comfort zone.

“To try something they are not familiar with culturally. I think it’s interesting to see students realizing that it’s not something scary. It’s interesting to learn a little bit more about something different,” said Chen.

As a kinesiology teacher, Chen said they study human development and these new sports will contribute to that goal.

They offer outside resources in every sport for students who want to continue playing outside of the university. She said any students interested in joining can simply show up at the event.
