MSI Afterburner To Add Independent Fan Controllers For The GeForce RTX 50 GPUs, New Version Rolls Out Before Retail Launch
The creator of MSI Afterburner announces an update to the software, especially for the GeForce RTX 50 GPUs, that will allow independent fan control.
MSI’s GeForce RTX 50 GPUs with Triple-Fan Configuration to Receive Individual Fan Controllers Through Afterburner Software, Allowing Versatile Fan Speeds on the Same GPU
The popular GPU overclocking and monitoring software, MSI Afterburner, will soon be getting an update allowing more control on the upcoming RTX 50 series GPUs. While not confirmed for every SKU, it will most likely be available on all RTX 50 series GPUs.
On the Guru3D forums, the creator of Afterburner, Alexy Nicolaychuk, confirmed that the new update will be released just before the retail launch of the RTX 5080. This also confirms that the GeForce RTX 5080 is going to be the first Blackwell GPU to see an official reveal or launch. It should be kept in mind that the new Afterburner version won’t be dropping around the official RTX 5080 reveal, which is on 6th January, but before the retail launch, which is expected to happen on 21st January.
Alexy said that the new software will allow controlling individual fans on the triple-fan RTX 5080 editions, unlike how the software gives users control over the GPU fans. This means users will be able to set different fan speeds and curves for each fan on the GPU to make cooling more efficient and control the noise. As per his statement, there will be a new ‘button’ for async fan speed control for the 3rd fan.
It’s not clear whether this update will also expand to other GPU series such as RTX 40 GPUs or later, having three fans. Currently, MSI does have an option called ‘Fan Sync’ that lets you control individual fans, but it’s restricted to just two fan GPUs. Coming back to the RTX 5080, we currently know of only one triple-fan GPU leaked before the launch. This is the MSI GeForce RTX 5080 GAMING TRIO, featuring triple fans.
More such triple fan designs are expected to be released by NVIDIA board partners. We are hardly two days away from the official launch. So, let’s wait for more updates on the RTX 5080, which is the second fastest in the Blackwell lineup, supposedly featuring 10752 Cuda Cores, 16 GB GDDR7 VRAM, and a TDP of 360W.
