#MUBB Travels To Maryland Friday Night – Marquette University Athletics

The No. 15/15 Marquette University men’s basketball team (3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) hits the road for the first time this season when the Golden Eagles travel to Maryland (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) for a 7 p.m. CT matchup on Friday, Nov. 15 in the XFINITY Center.  FS1 features the national television broadcast, with Brandon Gaudin (play-by-play) and Bill Raftery (analyst) calling the action.  Following Friday’s outing, the Golden Eagles will return home to host another Big Ten opponent, welcoming No. 13/12 Purdue to Fiserv Forum on Nov. 19.

Marquette Facing Maryland For Second Time

The Golden Eagles and Terps will meet for the second time on Friday night, with the first matchup coming in the championship game of the 2019 Orlando Invitational.

Maryland claimed that outing 84-63 on Dec. 1, 2019, holding Marquette all-time leading scorer Markus Howard to just six points after he averaged 45.5 points per game in the event in wins over Davidson and USC.  Forward Brendan Bailey scored a career-best 27 points in the title game for the Golden Eagles.

Despite facing Maryland just once previously, Marquette fans are familiar with Terps head coach Kevin Willard, who led Seton Hall for 12 seasons (2010-22) during a run that included the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament title.

Parham Makes Impact In Limited Minutes

Freshman forward Royce Parham collected his best performance of the young season on Monday night against Central Michigan, but was limited to just 13 minutes of action after suffering from cramping in his leg.

The Pittsburgh native netted a career-best nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor and also found time to chip in two rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocks.

Smart Reaches Coaching Milestone

Marquette’s win over Central Michigan on Monday night was the 350th for head coach Shaka Smart in his 16-year head coaching career and improved his overall record at Marquette to 78-30 (.722) in just over three seasons.

Smart guided the Golden Eagles to 56 victories in 2022-23 and 2023-24, the highest two-year total in program history.  Those campaigns were highlighted by the BIG EAST regular season and tourney title in 2022-23 and the team’s first trip to the Sweet 16 in over 10 years last season.

Ross Not Afraid To Deflect Attention

Junior guard Chase Ross has had an impact at both ends of the court through the first three games of the season and is averaging 15.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.7 steals per outing.

One category, however, that is tracked by the coaching staff, but not found in the box score is deflections.  Marquette finished with a single-game high 65 deflections (previous best was 56 vs. DePaul in 2023-24) in the win over Central Michigan, thanks in large part to Ross’ efforts.  In 36 minutes of action, Ross collected 18 deflections, marking the most in a game by a Marquette player since Shaka Smart‘s arrival in 2021-22.

Ross owned the previous record (14 vs. George Mason) as well, a mark that lasted just one outing.
