Multi-million dollar Hereford sports complex named after John Bunch

HEREFORD, Texas (KFDA) – Small town sports throughout the Texas Panhandle have been growing more and more in recent years, and today marked a major milestone for one local community.

Hereford Sports & Wellness named their new sports complex “John Bunch Complex,” the organization announced at a press conference today.

Bunch coached youth sports in Hereford for over 20 years as the president of Hereford Kids, Inc., before passing away in 2019.

“This facility will give great joy,” Hereford Mayor Cathy Bunch said. “Especially to the youth of Hereford.”

The new multi-million dollar complex boasts full synthetic turf fields for four baseball/softball fields.

The fields come complete with portable fences that can adjust depending on the sport being played.

The outfields are even marked with two soccer fields for seven-on-seven competition and six smaller soccer fields for three-on-three and four-on-four action.

Hereford Sports & Wellness President/CEO Jimmy Lackey emphasized how monumental this complex is.

“In Amarillo, we haven’t passed a Parks bond since 1974,” Lackey said. “Think about that. When your city steps up and your citizens step up to do things, in my opinion, [do] what’s best for kids, your priorities are in order.”

Hereford Sports & Wellness is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization responsible for the capital fund drive to pay for additional amenities not covered by city funds. To date, they’ve raised $493,000 out of their $1.2 million goal.
