Myrtle Beach celebrates Juneteenth with parade, fashion show, and live music

In Myrtle Beach on Saturday, the community came together to celebrate Juneteenth.

The federally recognized holiday in the U.S. commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

As part of the celebrations, there was a parade that ended near Carver Street.

Saturday’s celebrations also featured an Afrocentric fashion show, food and craft vendors, and live music.

The Myrtle Beach Director of Neighborhood Services said the holiday is important to celebrate.

“We have to remember in order so that history does not repeat itself, so I am big on education. And so that in itself is an educational opportunity for not just African American people, but for all people worldwide. We celebrate, but we also educate,” said Mary “Cookie” Goings, the Director of Neighborhood Services for Myrtle Beach.

Juneteenth will officially be celebrated on June 19th.
