N.J. school district announces last-minute half day after cutting 93 jobs

An email went out at 7:17 a.m. Thursday, announcing an unexpected half day in the East Orange School District “due to unforeseen circumstances,” parents said.

The closing came the morning after a heated five-hour board of education meeting in which 93 teaching and coaching positions were cut.

School officials did not immediately respond to questions about the reason for the half day. It was unclear if a large number of teachers had called out sick.
