Gretchen Walsh not only made a statement for her chances of making the US Olympic team, she let the world know she should be considered a favorite for gold in the Paris Games.
Walsh set a world record in her semifinal heat in the 100-meter butterfly on Saturday in Indianapolis, swimming the event in 55.18 seconds to set the world record.
Wash is a former Nashville swimming star. She won numerous high school state titles while at Harpeth Hall. She’s now a college swimmer at Virginia.
The previous record was 55.48 set by Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom in 2016.
Gretchen was the youngest of 1,500 swimmers at the 2016 Olympic Trials. She was the first swimmer to break 48 seconds in the 100 butterfly at the NCAA championships.
