National Video Game Day celebrates cultural, entertainment value of gaming
TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – National Video Game Day is an annual celebration dedicated to recognize the cultural and entertainment significance of video games.
“I think video games in general is an industry that has evolved over the years significantly,” says Joshua Neaves, Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Director of Student Engagement at UT Tyler.
During he COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the rise of video game interest grew dramatically, creating programs like e-sports at UT Tyler.
“When the community came together to help launch this program, it took off,” says Neaves. “It’s well over 300-plus students that we constantly see stay connected and engaged in this program.”
Tyler Roberts, head leader of the R-6 E-Sports division at UT Tyler, found his passion and love for e-sports as if it were another sport.
With five different e-Sports programs that competitively compete with other colleges at both state and national level, the UT Tyler E-Sports plans to expand their program. They plan to create more opportunities for students to join their teams.well.”e

“It’s much more inclusive than some sports can be,” says team captain of the UT Tyler Valorent E-Sports team, Jonah Aikens. “I think it’s something that, if anybody is interested in trying it there, it’s much easier and more accessible for people to get out there, and experience it for themselves.”
Most importantly, the culture of the gaming world allows gamers to create a strong bond with one another.
UT Tyler E-Sports will be kicking off their varsity plays next week against other institutions. For more information on upcoming events, click here.
