Navy Federal Pledges Support for Proposed Pool/Fitness Facility – TysonsToday
The Town of Vienna’s largest employer, Navy Federal Credit Union, wants to help make the community’s decades-old wish for an indoor pool and fitness center come true sooner rather than later. As the Town Council considers whether to fund the proposed facility with a temporary, one percent meals tax increase, Navy Federal is offering to advance the funding needed for design that the Town would pay back at zero interest.
“Navy Federal Credit Union is a part of the Vienna community, and we have long been a proud supporter of the Town’s events and activities,” said George Eichert, the credit union’s Senior Vice President of Workplace Infrastructure & Logistics. “Many of our employees live in the Vienna area, and we are excited about the prospect of assisting the Town in building this facility for the benefit and health of the community.”
The Vienna Town Council is currently seeking public input on the proposed temporary one percent meals tax increase, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2025, and sunset ten years later, on Jan. 1, 2035. It’s the same funding mechanism that was imposed by the Town Council once before, from 2002 to 2008, to pay for the Vienna Town Green. With the meals tax increase, the new aquatic and fitness facility could open by 2030.
“This is such an exciting opportunity for Vienna, and we are grateful for Navy Federal’s continued support of our community,” said Mayor Linda Colbert.
Two common themes have consistently emerged in community engagement sessions and surveys over the years – an indoor recreational pool and a fitness center. Community members are invited to share their thoughts about paying for the proposed pool and fitness facility with a temporary meals tax increase by emailing the Town Council at council@viennava.gov or by calling 703-255-6304. Community members may ask questions and learn about the proposed meal tax increase in person at a town hall meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. and voice their opinions at a public hearing on Monday, Nov. 18, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held at Vienna Town Hall, 127 Center St. S in Vienna, VA.
