NBA First Scorer Props – December 5

Chicago Bulls vs. San Antonio Spurs

Tipoff – 8:00 pm EST
Frost Bank Center – San Antonio

You’re not going to see an advantage on the tip like this in many games this year. The Spurs, largely with Victor Wembanyama on the tip, is winning 71.4% of all tips, putting them in the top five in the league. Although some might balk with Wemby on the mend, the Spurs have won all four of the tips when he’s been out this year. The Bulls on the other hand are historically bad when it comes to tip wins. They’ve won just one tip in the 21 games they’ve played this year – which comes out to a 4.8% win rate. With the tip winner currently getting 65.5% of the first scores, that’s enough to already like the Spurs here. .

It’s sort of hard to predict what the Spurs offense will look like with Wembanyama out. He’s been out four times this year and with variable results from their offense. However, one consistency we’ve seen in this matchup is the first buckets that the Bulls give up. They’ve regularly been scored on by the other team’s big man. In the last nine first buckets they’ve allowed – which are in the last nine games – the Bulls haven’t given up a first bucket to anyone shorter than Kyle Kuzma (6’9″). The majority of those have been the opposing team’s center. As a result, why not try Wembanyama’s fill-in here – Zach Collins. He scored first in one of the four games that Wembanyama missed earlier in the year.

Toronto Raptors vs. Golden State Warriors

Tipoff – 10:00 pm EST
Chase Center – San Francisco, CA

The Raptors aren’t exactly world beaters on the tip this year. They’ve won just 40.9% of their tips this season. However, the rate at which they’re converting that (59.1%) puts them in the number seven spot in the league. Now they’ll stroll into the bay area and actually have an advantage on the tip. The Warriors are one of the very worst teams on the tip in the league. They have won just a quarter of their tips, which puts them only ahead of the Bulls. With the Raptors being good at converting even when they don’t win the tip and having a great shot at winning it here, they’re a slam dunk to score first.

I’ve perhaps gone to this well too many times, but it’s hard to ignore the amount of early action that Dillon Brooks is getting. He’s featured prominently in the play-by-play data in the early parts of most games. For the amount of shots he takes, he gets an exorbitant amount of early looks. That low number of total shots helps drive up his odds here and are definitely worth a stab on Thursday.
