The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has issued a strong reminder for residents and travelers that road conditions in Western North Carolina remain hazardous due to damage caused by Hurricane Helene. Officials have emphasized that travel in the area should be strictly limited to emergencies, as many routes are still impassable.

I-40, a major artery through the region, remains blocked at several points, while I-26 is closed at the Tennessee state line. Additional road closures are expected, as many areas remain unable to report the full extent of the damage. The NCDOT is urging the public to avoid all non-essential travel to and through Western North Carolina.

The department advises checking the latest road conditions via DriveNC.gov for those who must travel, as the situation remains fluid. Images shared by the NCDOT show significant damage, including downed trees and washed-out roadways, which are impeding efforts to reopen the area to traffic.

NCDOT stresses that all roads in the affected area should be treated as closed unless otherwise specified, reinforcing the need for extreme caution during this recovery period.
