Netflix Unveils Premiere Date, Trailer For Documentary ‘Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy’

Netflix on Monday unveiled the trailer for Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy, a new documentary special in which industry insiders and whistleblowers reveal the secret tricks of major global brands, announcing that the film will premiere on the streamer on November 20.

Written and directed by News & Documentary Emmy Award nominee Nic Stacey (The World According to Jeff Goldblum), the doc’s basic idea is that the lies you’ve been sold will cost you. Hailing from a two-time Oscar-winning team including Grain Media, it pulls back the curtain on the secretive world of the most influential brands, as insiders and whistleblowers expose the covert manipulation tricks to keep you buying, no matter the cost. This is the story big business doesn’t want you to know.

“Buying new stuff feels great, right?” the trailer asks. “The problem is that every year, we’re consuming more, producing more. And there’s a flip side to that that no one wants you to see.” As we hear this, we see cars driving on freeways surrounded by towering mountains of trash. Among those featured in the doc, who are in the know regarding the psychology driving consumerism and how it’s weaponized, are whistleblowers from companies like Adidas, Apple and Amazon.

Flora Bagenal produced the doc, with Alex Marengo, Chloe Leland, and Orlando von Einsiedel serving as executive producers.
