Nevada charter school wins $100K for fitness center to promote physical education
Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada is one of three schools in Nevada to win a $100,000 fitness center. They are the only winner located in northern Nevada.
The state-of-the-art DON’T QUIT! Fitness Center was gifted to them through the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils.
These fitness centers were given to schools who focus on physical education as much as academics. Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada has many different physical programs which is offered to middle schoolers to promote physical heath. The school offers dance, yoga, and person fitness programs along with many sports teams and P.E. opportunities.
“Our students have really great success rates in terms of productivity. We have a variety of sports that we offer in middle school, and it’s exciting to see the students be able to build their muscular capacity and tone to achieve well in those areas, said Jami Austin who is the principal at Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada.
Teachers at Pinecrest Academy say students look forward to P.E. and getting to participate with their peers in the physical movement aspect.
“We really are all about physical education for these kids that other schools are not putting forward, and we are making sure that this is a priority,” said Donyell Johnson who is the dance, yoga, and personal fitness teacher at Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada.
Right now, Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada is meeting with the fitness council to measure their space and going over equipment offerings. By the fall, Pinecrest Academy of Northern Nevada will have a ribbon cutting and reveal of the brand-new fitness center. Governor Joe Lombardo and the chairman of the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils will be attending the ribbon cutting.
