New Balance unveils release date for their fashion-forward 1906 loafer

Indeed, New Balance is transforming its renowned 1906 sneaker into a stylish penny loafer. This innovative reinterpretation elegantly combines the elements of formal wear with exceptional comfort and contemporary flair.
As the brand suggests, the dynamic model was motivated by a need for versatility that seamlessly blends sport and formal attire. This innovative adaptation retains the hallmark features of the original silhouette while transforming it into the classic form of a penny loafer. Notable components include the signature open-holed mesh upper, which offers breathability and comfort, as well as the curvilinear synthetic overlays that provide a modern touch. Additionally, the design incorporates the 860v2 sole unit, complete with its segmented ABZORB SBS pods at the heel. Charlotte Lee, the Senior Footwear Designer at New Balance, shared her thoughts on the ingenious footwear initiative known as the 1906 Loafer:
“Our 2002R had evolved into a mule for a few projects and the loafer felt like a more progressive version of that. We talked a lot about the luxury fashion space and how there is no longer a hard line between sports and luxury. With our previous heritage marketing campaign, ‘What the Well-Dressed Runner Wears’ it felt like a relevant space for us to play in. These conversations resulted in me taking the 1906R artwork and merging it into a loafer form and ideating colour application.
Most of the product creation process was sample based, starting with a taped-last to ensure the 1906R pattern was correctly represented within a loafer form. There was no need for a new blueprint for this model as it was using the existing sole of the 1906 sneaker”

The new loafer aims to blur the lines between high-performance heritage and contemporary fashion innovation, especially following its impressive debut on the runway at this year’s Fall/Winter Paris Fashion Week. The highly anticipated 1906 Loafer is set to launch worldwide on September 19, 2024. This stylish footwear will be offered at a recommended retail price of $160 USD, making it accessible to fashion enthusiasts across the globe.
