New Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center opens as Dillon Gym renovations advance

Sept. 10, 2024

The new Center and improvements to Dillon Gym prioritize accessibility and sustainability, and include upgraded recreational and community spaces.

The next time you pass by Princeton’s Elm Drive, you might notice something new: the Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center. The more than 40,000 square-foot addition project complements the historic Dillon Gym, and includes Tower Plaza, an accessible pedestrian entrance and lobby off Elm Drive, and a two-story Wellness Pavilion.

The new and renovated spaces in phase two increase accessibility throughout the building and further demonstrate Princeton’s commitment to upgrading campus facilities to create an inclusive environment for the entire community. Alongside the new accessible entrance and lobby, the space now has an elevator that services all levels on the south side of the building.

As Princeton continues to work to create a culture of wellness for students and employees, the Center’s two-story Wellness Pavilion further enhances the health and fitness experience with the installation of new selectorized strength equipment, cardio equipment and two new fitness studios.

In keeping with the University’s dedication to sustainability, the building incorporates various sustainable features, including natural ventilation, mass timber construction, a green roof and shower facilities for bicycle commuters. The project also aims to achieve LEED Gold certification, a standard set by the U.S. Green Building Council.

This certification will complement the University’s focus on responsible development and sustainable design and align with the Sustainability Action Plan’s goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance stormwater management.

Phase three of the renovations, slated to open in Fall 2025, will include renovations to the Stephens Fitness Center Annex and a new outside basketball court. Phase one of the project, which opened in early 2024, introduced significant updates to the DeNunzio Pool and Dillon Gym fitness areas.

Staff and faculty can find information about accessing the Class of 1986 Fitness and Wellness Center and Dillon Gym on the Campus Rec website or by downloading their app. Both platforms provide information on gym hours, available amenities, memberships, schedules, events, programs and more.

This project and other new construction on campus is made possible in part through the Venture Forward campaign, which supports the University’s strategic plan through alumni engagement and philanthropic support.
