New company buying Montgomery-based food business

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Whitfield Foods Inc., a staple in Montgomery since 1906, has announced that it is selling its assets to SoGo Packaging LLC.

Whitfield is a beverage co-packing business with its signature brand Alaga labeling syrup and hot sauce, plus its Yellow Label syrup products.

The company says the asset purchase agreement means certain assets Whitfield uses will be acquired by SoGo, meaning SoGo will operate the Montgomery site. The company says this will not impact jobs.

A spokesman said Whitfield Foods sold the assets used for its syrup products, such as Alaga syrup. SoGo Packaging is not buying any assets related to the Alaga or other syrup products.

“I want to thank our incredibly talented employees for their continued focus and hard work, and our customers and suppliers for their support,” Whitfield’s president, Joe Friday, said in a news release.

Friday will become SoGo’s president in Montgomery.

The release says SoGo is a new company formed through the collaboration of Mark S. Avent, manager of NoSo Holdings LLC, and William A. Brown, president of Brown Bottling Group Inc.

The purchase agreement is expected to close on Oct. 31. SoGo says it will provide post-closing opportunities to current employees, as well as make capital investment to grow and diversify the business.

“This transaction symbolizes visionary business development dedicated to enhancing Montgomery’s economy and elevating the local community,” representatives of Whitfield and SoGo said in a joint statement.
