New Galaxy Exclusive Reveals Samsung’s Next Foldable Phone
Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 in the summer of 2024 was preceded by talk of more models than the two base designs. Only those two handsets were released following the Galaxy Unpacked event; since then, a new variant of the Z Fold 6 has been launched. Now, we have reports on Samsung’s plan for the Z Flip 6.
Industry analyst Ross Young (CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants) reports that Samsung will launch a Fan Edition of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in 2025. He also notes that the phone will use the same display as next year’s Galaxy Z Flip 7.
Samsung’s Fan Edition moniker is used to signify a phone or accessory, offering a significant proportion of features of the main line but at a cost-effective price. While the FE range includes the Galaxy S24, Galaxy Tab, and Galaxy Buds peripherals, to name three, there has yet to be a folding FE for either design.
It looks like the Flip form factor will win out in the first FE race.
Given that the screen is a key cost of a foldable phone, using the latest screen means that compromises will need to be made in other areas to keep costs down. Samsung will likely use an older chipset at the heart of the Z Flip FE, potentially in conjunction with less storage than the Z Flip 7. The camera is also another likely target for cost-cutting.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 are expected to launch in the summer of 2025. Whether the Z Fold Fan Edition launches simultaneously remains to be seen. While it will share the screen with the Z Flip 7, Samsung may not want to dampen the potential of the Z Flip 7 with a cheaper Z Flip FE launched alongside it.
The slim form factor of the Galaxy Z Fold SE—a variant of the Z Fold 6—was not launched alongside the parent handset. Instead, it was released in two territories nearly four months after the main event. There’s a strong argument for Samsung to follow the same approach with the Z Flip Fan Edition.
