NEW GLARUS, Wis. (WMTV) – New Glarus is hosting the second annual World Euchre Championship this weekend, with over five times the number of players participating this year.

People from across the country and even Canada are gathering at New Glarus Fest Haus to play the beloved card game.

“Even if you’re not a player, the entire community is welcome,” Mary Siegenthaler, board member of host New Glarus Cares Community Foundation said. “We have eight exhibitors out here. We have four food trucks. It’s beautiful today.”

She says last year they had 62 players. This year they have hundreds.

“Today is a singles tournament with 170 people signed up,” Siegenthaler said Saturday. “Tomorrow is doubles tournament with 260 people and 50 on the waiting list.”

Funds from this year’s event are going toward a cause near and dear to the community.

“There is a park structure, playground equipment at Candy Cane Park and it’s really old and not too safe anymore,” she said. “So the funds are being raised to create an inclusive playground and replace all of that equipment. So we’re working with the village to do that.”

The winners will go home with the World Euchre Championship belt along with other prizes donated by local sponsors.
