New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell to travel to Mexico City for Bloomberg summit

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is headed for Mexico City, Mexico, to attend a Bloomberg summit that will host city leaders from around the world, the Cantrell administration announced in a statement Sunday. 

Bloomberg CityLab 2024 will convene more than 500 mayors and policymakers to explore solutions to political, technological and environmental challenges that cities across the globe face. 

“Topics will include climate resilience, infrastructure, and urban innovation, aligning with Mayor Cantrell’s commitment to building a more sustainable and economically thriving New Orleans,” the statement reads. 

Cantrell was set to leave for Mexico City on Sunday, but it’s unclear when she will return. No other details about the mayor’s trip were released. 

Cantrell has taken several trips abroad through her time in office, and her travel schedule and habits have faced intense scrutiny in the last two years. 

The controversy exploded in 2022, when Cantrell was found to be improperly charging taxpayers for flight upgrades and was required to reimburse the city nearly $30,000. Cantrell canceled trips to Singapore and Argentina amid the uproar, but proceeded to take a handful of international trips in the following months.
