New Planet Fitness in Shirley eyes September opening

Shirley’s new Planet Fitness is accepting memberships and staffers project the popular fitness facility will open in September.

The 15,200-square-foot health club will operate inside the South Port Shopping Mall at 999 Montauk Highway, occupying space that was formerly home to Mandee, Pacific Tanning, GNC and The Children’s Place. A change of use for the vacant storefronts — located in the back, northwest corner of the shopping plaza, was granted by Brookhaven Town’s planning board in October.

The club is offering a “pre-grand opening membership sale,” where new members can pay a $1 startup fee and lock in a $19.99 monthly fee for the Black Card membership, which allows gym goers to use all Planet Fitness facilities, nationwide. Planet Fitness’ regular monthly rate for the Black Card is $24.99.

Workers at the Shirley location said the club will open in September. The franchise’s Google Maps page indicates that the club will open on Sept. 15.

The Planet Fitness chain, known for its “Judgement Free Zone” slogan, has other nearby clubs in Rocky Point, Medford, Patchogue, Hampton Bays and Riverhead. Planet Fitness has more than 2,600 locations across the United States and in Mexico, Canada, Australia and Panama.

Eighteen new Planet Fitness facilities opened in the second quarter of 2024 (between March 31 and June 30).
