HURRICANE, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The Putnam County Bank Sports Complex, a brand new addition to Hurricane Bridge Park that features four baseball fields, has officially opened for summer.

Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards said, “Adding these four-turf baseball/softball fields to Hurricane is tremendous. The economic impact that it will make will be awesome for business in Hurricane. It will be awesome just to show off our city and our county to everybody.”

Edwards said the city doesn’t want too much growth, but amenities have become important for the Hurricane community.

“It’s very important to have awesome facilities for our kids and grandkids and that’s what it’s all about,” the mayor said.

Edwards believes working for the youth is the key to building a stronger community.

“It’s all about the kids. If you do everything for kids as mayor, everything else will really work itself out.”

Ashley Alford Glance, president of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, warned local business to prepare for increased foot traffic.

“You better be staffed, because we’re going to have some really great influx of people into our community for these tournaments,” she said.

Glance was excited about the future growth in Putnam County.

“I hope there’s a lot more that’s coming next. We have seen tremendous growth as far as recreational opportunities.”

“We can utilize the assets that we have to continue to grow and continue to bring more into the community.” Glance said.

Other new features at Hurricane Bridge Park include a disc golf course, batting cages and a baseball-themed playground.

Sixty teams will compete at multiple parks in Putnam County, and the first game is set for 8 a.m. Saturday, June 1.
