New Report Details Global Travel Industry’s Resurgence
Travel research and events leader Phocuswright has released its Global Travel Market Report 2024, revealing an impressive 24 percent surge in 2023, with gross bookings reaching $1.5 trillion.
The U.S. retains its position as the world’s largest travel market after garnering a whopping $476 billion in bookings. That figure is more than three times the size of second-ranked China.
China’s travel market rebounded with a 72 percent growth in 2023. In South America, Brazil entered into the top 15 markets, pushing out Scandinavia.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates—home to popular destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi—ranks seventh and accounts for over half of the Middle East’s travel market. Plus, several European markets saw significant growth as the euro gained against the U.S. dollar.
Spain led the way with a dramatic 40 percent surge. Italy, Germany, the UK and France also saw double-digit gains.
“The travel industry’s current trajectory is not simply a recovery; it’s a testament to the industry’s adaptability and the enduring human desire to explore,” Eugene Ko, Director of Marketing and Communications at Phocuswright, said in a statement. “The impressive growth in emerging markets like Brazil and the resurgence of China signal a shift in the global travel landscape. The industry is evolving, and those who embrace these new dynamics will thrive in the years to come.”
