New South Omaha nonprofit to focus on getting more people jobs

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Tuesday marked a new chapter for Heartland Work Force Solutions.

The nonprofit is cutting the ribbon to their brand new office fully equipped with resources to help people in South Omaha get jobs.

“[It will have] everything that a person will need from curriculums, job search, get connected with employers for new job opportunities or change sectors,” Jennifer Rodriguez, South Omaha affiliate site coordinator said.

The idea first sparked three years ago, when the current center that you see right now sat as an abandoned building.

Cesar Garcia, the executive director with Canopy South said they decided to take the building into their own hands.

“It’s been a historical building that’s been around for 100 years and we saw an opportunity to revitalize the building,” Garcia said.

It’s now three stories with different meeting rooms for the community to use.

It serves as an extension to the nonprofit’s main North Omaha office.

Rodriguez said what makes this center different is the staff is primarily bilingual to help serve the growing Latinx and Hispanic population in Omaha.

“We’re not charging for any services,” Rodriguez said. “It is walk in services and there’s no need for appointments; They can use our computers and resources, they can also print, and fax all the things that are needed.”

Rodriguez said their current office in North Omaha serves about 3,000 visitors monthly and she’s hoping for more in the new place.
