New UNL Extension program aims to boost small-scale produce businesses

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – The University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) Extension in North Platte is introducing a new horticulture program aimed at helping people start their own businesses selling produce.

The initiative is called “Growing for Market”.

“This will be geared towards anyone whoever is interested in starting to grow produce for farmers markets, sell to schools or even our local grocery stores across Nebraska,” UNL Extension Horticulture Educator David Lott said.

Lott noted that the landscape of farmers markets is shifting, with farms now typically reduced to just one acre.

He offered key tips for new producers, advising them to plan ahead, choose the right crops, practice proper crop rotation and fertility management, select pollinators, and implement an effective irrigation system.

UNL Extension will offer an online class for beginner farmers during the first week of November. Interested individuals can apply by visiting the UNL Extension website.
