Newark airport’s Terminal A wins world’s best new airport terminal award by Skytrax

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced that Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal A was recognized as the world’s best new airport terminal by Skytrax, a global airport evaluation firm.

The international accolade came less than a month after Skytrax gave Terminal A a five-star rating after auditing the terminal’s facilities, operations and customer service.

The recognition was announced Thursday at the Passenger Terminal Expo & Conference in Frankfurt, Germany. The award marked the second consecutive time the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey received the honor, as LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B in New York was named the best terminal in 2023. LaGuardia and Newark airports are the only two airports in North America that have been awarded the highest Skytrax rating, according to the Port Authority.

“This is a tremendously well-deserved honor for the flagship of the Port Authority’s ongoing renaissance at Newark Liberty International Airport,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement.

The evaluation before the award involved surveys to passengers regarding terminal facilities, staff service, check-in, arrivals, transfers, security, customs and shopping.

Terminal A opened in 2023 after the airport closed down the 50-year-old former Terminal A.

The revamped new terminal cost $2.7 billion and represented both the Port Authority’s largest-ever single investment in New Jersey and the state’s largest design-build project, according to a statement by Port Authority.

The investment in Newark’s airport is part of a $30 billion mega project to transform major airports in the New York and New Jersey metro area. The next phase of this interstate endeavor will be the redesign of Newark’s airport Terminal B.
