NFLer Suspended for Gambling Warns Team of League’s Betting Rules

Isaiah Rodgers, who was reinstated into the NFL back in April following a year-long suspension due to violating the NFL’s gambling policy, was the Philadelphia Eagles’ special guest speaker for a seminar on the league’s betting rules.

The former Indianapolis Colts cornerback was released shortly after his suspension went into effect in June 2023 and was signed by the Eagles in August 2023. Rodgers is now competing for a starting role in Philadelphia, where he gave a presentation to his Eagles teammates recounting his experience with the league’s gambling policy. 

“On the field and off the field, I’m better, in every aspect,” Rodgers said during Eagles’ training camp, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

“I think I took this year to reflect a lot and I think I definitely understand this is something I never want to lose again, so I’m definitely not taking it for granted.” 

Details of Rodgers’ violation

Rodgers placed roughly 100 wagers on online sportsbooks registered in someone else’s name, while also allegedly placing parlay wagers on Indianapolis Colts games between $25 and $50 per parlay. He’s since confirmed that these were “crazy-leg parlays” and “just funny bets, nothing too serious” in regards to his $25 and $50 parlay wagers.

Rodgers also confirmed that a $1,000 prop bet placed on former teammate Jonathan Taylor’s rushing total yards was made from his account, although not directly on his mobile device. Rodgers wouldn’t name the individual who placed the bet due to legal reasons, but did own up to the violation.

“At the end of the day, I knew the rules, I wasn’t supposed to do it and I got to take what comes with it,” he said in April.

After losing $2.7 million in salary due to his suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy, Rodgers is now earning $1.055 million under a one-year contract with the Eagles. 

Rodgers expressed how eager he is to return to the football field in 2024.

Eagles linebacker Devin White expressed admiration for Rodgers’ response to his suspension.

“He told his story and it was something so little that you never would think could be so big,” White said. “He basically just told everybody his story, what happened, and just let everybody know it wasn’t worth it. That was pretty – I don’t say it was cool because you don’t want anybody to go through that. 

“He’s a high character guy, and he’s a guy that’s not ashamed of his situation. He took it on the chin, and he suffered his consequences and he fought his way back and he’s doing a great job with it.”
