Nisu Bakery & Cafe oven fundraiser successful thanks to donors, businesses

HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – In less than one week, the Nisu Bakery & Cafe has raised more than $2,700 to support its purchase of a new oven motor.

“It’s way more than I was expecting, but it covers exactly everything,” Owner Irma Boyd said.

The restaurant set a goal the day after Christmas to raise $2,300 after the motor in one of its two ovens stopped working, hindering production. Boyd says the business will be back on track soon.

“I hope that within a week and a half, due to the holidays, we will be up and running with both ovens,” Boyd continued. “Hopefully sooner.”

Boyd wants to thank the numerous community members and businesses that reached out to donate, including A-1 General Contracting in Hancock. The business gave an undisclosed amount to not only complete but exceed the goal.

In a statement to TV6, A-1 General Contracting Owner Keith Bastion said:

“We are happy that A-1 could be a part of the effort to help out a local business.”

Boyd says having both ovens operational will help with her goal of selling the business, as she hopes to find someone who will continue running it as it is. While she’s loved being a part of Hancock’s business scene, she says her daughter requires an area with access to more resources.

“I will be leaving my recipes, my secret recipes, that are from my lineage,” Boyd added. “And then also I would stay and teach them how to make them for two weeks, for a month, whatever time they need to show the ropes of the whole business and, of course, the specialty bakery.”

Boyd encourages anyone who is interested to reach out to her. You can reach out through the shop’s Facebook page or call (906) 523-5398.
