Norwich boss Thorup backs VAR for Championship
Norwich boss Johannes Hoff Thorup wants to see VAR introduced in the Championship, despite benefitting from its absence in their 3-2 win over Derby.
The ball appeared to go out of play in the build-up to two of Borja Sainz’s three goals at Pride Park.
However, Derby boss Paul Warne is less keen on the idea despite admitting Corey Blackett-Taylor’s stoppage time goal for his team was offside.
“I think we need VAR,” said Thorup, who took over from David Wagner in May.
“The best league over here has it, and I know there is a lot of discussion every week over here over decisions.
“But there will always be mistakes and I will not sit here and blame the referees, Saturday after Saturday.
“We just have to make sure we support them, whether video systems or other ideas, that’s the way to support these guys.”
While he jokingly admitted he would have liked to have had the technology available on Saturday, Warne does not agree with Thorup’s assessment.
“Would I like to see it after today? Of course,” he said. “But I don’t know. I just think the game is getting more and more complicated.
“We are talking about inches here and there but even though I would have liked it today, you could argue our second goal was offside.
“If you do have VAR, it is still someone’s opinion.”
Norwich’s victory was their side’s third of the season and they are currently ninth in the table, while Derby, promoted from League One last season, are 14th after successive defeats.
