Novato payroll company is closing after 3 decades in business

In business for 34 years, Accuchex plans to wind down operations next year. Senior executives have decided to start a financial literacy program for youth.

A Novato payroll service bureau focused on small business is closing its books after 34 years.

Accuchex plans to close by spring 2025, gradually phasing out services for its more than 1,000 clients nationwide over the next six months. Its 20 employees have already secured new positions.

“It’s sad (to leave), but it was time,” Executive Vice President Leslie Ruhland said, adding that she has thoroughly enjoyed the time spent building the Accuchex business. She declined to provide financial information on the privately held firm. “We valued the local community as a high-tech, high-touch company.”

Accuchex management posted a letter to its clients on the website: “We wish to take this moment to thank every client, team member, partner and customer who has been part of our story. Your support and engagement have meant the world to us, and we appreciate the kind words and well wishes you have bestowed upon Accuchex and its staff.”

Questions or concerns may be fielded at 415-883-7733 or to acxhelp@accuchex.com, the posting added.

Ruhland — who worked in business development in the hospitality industry before starting Accuchex — is ready to move on to other ventures. She plans to start a financial literacy program for youth.

“I’m very excited. It’s important the youth become financially responsible at a younger age. And some adults don’t even know how to read a paycheck,” she said.

This new endeavor will require venture capital, though the amount, sources and final name are still undecided. Ruhland is currently working out the details and plans. She plans to hire a small team to run the new company, which may operate out of the same 7,000-square-foot 365 Bel Marin Keys Blvd. building the Ruhlands bought in 1998. Or, the space may be leased to another party.
