Officials provide update on Springfield Crossing shopping plaza project

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Several Western Mass News viewers have reached out to us, looking for answers. They’ve noticed a lack of activity at the old Eastfield Mall site where the new Springfield Crossing shopping plaza is expected to open next year.

Springfield crossing had been projected to open in the summer of 2025.

We stopped by the site on Tuesday and found most of the area where the Eastfield Mall used to be is either gone or unattended. Like Western Mass News viewers are telling us, we found no construction underway for the new shopping center, which will include Ulta Beauty and Pet Smart.

We took questions to Springfield City Councilor Malo Brown, he told us the project is in the review phase, specifically for the water and sewer work as well as building structures.

“It has to be done in phases, and right now this is probably one of the most important parts of the infrastructure, of the actual different things were going to put down there,” said Councilor Brown.

Councilor Brown also told us they are excited to share the stores that could potentially be coming to the plaza.

“There is a particular well-known shop, that hasn’t offered, they haven’t offered business in Springfield, Mass., so it’s gonna be a new shop,” added Councilor Brown.

Councilor Brown said that as of right now, they are projected to finish the project on time, next summer.
