Officials remind residents of lightning safety and outdoor sports activities

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – The Sarasota County Emergency Services urges people to practice safety when playing sports outside.

Activities should be stopped when:

  • You see lightning: The ability to see lightning varies (time of day, weather conditions, and obstructions)
  • You hear thunder: If heard, the storm is likely to be within 10 miles. Traffic, wind, and precipitation may limit the ability to hear thunder to less than 10 miles.
  • The skies look threatening Thunderstorms can also develop directly overhead and some storms may develop lightning just as they move into an area.
