ZANESVILLE, OH – As Ohioans prepare for tomorrow’s 4th of July celebrations, the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding residents to prioritize safety while driving.

With more people on the roads heading to firework displays, barbecues, and family gatherings, it’s crucial to be mindful of traffic laws to ensure a fun and incident-free Independence Day. Drivers are encouraged to leave early, be patient, and to plan ahead as heavy traffic is expected.

“Familiarize yourself of the roadways, especially with the weather and construction congestion. Look ahead at routes that may be closed and alternative options because of heavy travel and traffic.” Zanesville Post Commander, Kristi Mistovich said.

The patrol will be out in full force throughout the holiday weekend, focusing on cracking down on impaired drivers. Officers will also be monitoring for distracted driving, speed limits, and other traffic violations.

“This is an all-hands-on deck approach. This is our prime time. This is a thing we focus on because our ultimate goal is to keep motorists safe during this holiday season. We’ll have extra officers out on duty. We actually partnered with our local police department and sheriff’s office to focus on our major travel routes like 70 and U.S. 40. We also have aircraft in to help assist us with aerial speed support.” Mistovich said.

If you witness drug activity, dangerous, or impaired driving, you are encouraged to report it by calling #677.
