Ohio’s casinos, racinos report uptick in May gambling revenue

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Ohio’s casinos and racinos saw an uptick in gambling revenue and had their best May since 2021.

The state’s 11 casinos and racinos brought in a combined $204 million in May, up from $196 million in 2023 and $202 million in 2022. The record for the month was set in 2021, at $209 million, according to data from the Ohio casino control and lottery commissions.

This is the money kept by the gambling houses, after paying out winnings, but before state taxes and fees.

So far in 2023, the casinos and racinos have had just over $1 billion in gambling revenue. Revenue is about on par with where it was this time last year.

These figures exclude legalized sports betting, which is offered at casinos and racinos but tracked separately, as is horse racing.

The four casinos, which can offer slot machines and table games like blackjack, reported $84.6 million of gambling revenue in May, up from $80.6 million last year. The state’s seven racinos, the gambling houses at horse racetracks that can only offer slot machines, brought in $119.8 million, up from $115.3 million.

In the Greater Cleveland market, May revenue was:

* $26.8 million at MGM Northfield Park, up from $25.6 million in May 2023.

* $15.4 million at JACK Thistledown Racino, down from $15.7 million.

* $21.3 million at JACK Casino Cleveland, up from $20.7 million last March.
