Ohtani injures shoulder in stolen-base attempt in Game 2
LOS ANGELES – As soon as Anthony Volpe applied the tag at second base, Shohei Ohtani knew something was wrong. He immediately signaled for a timeout to the second-base umpire.
After drawing a walk against Yankees reliever Clay Holmes in the seventh inning of Game 2 against the Yankees, Ohtani took off for second base and appeared to overrun the bag as he reached awkwardly with his left arm.
Ohtani stayed on the dirt for a few minutes. After getting checked out by a trainer, he walked off the field with some assistance with what appeared to be a left shoulder injury. Ohtani could be heard on the FOX broadcast telling the Dodgers’ training staff in Japanese it’s his left shoulder.
The severity of the injury is unclear, but Ohtani was in obvious discomfort following the slide. Losing Ohtani for any amount of time would be a devastating blow to the Dodgers’ offense moving forward.
Prior to the injury, Ohtani was 1-for-8 in the Fall Classic, but scored the game-tying run in the eighth inning in the Game 1 win.
