One of the Indiana Jones Franchise’s Oldest Mysteries Has Finally Been Solved

The intricate relationship between Harrison Ford‘s Indiana Jones and Karen Allen‘s Marion Ravenwood became a central thread in the long-running movie franchise about the intrepid teacher-turned-adventurer. However, even though Allen made an unexpected appearance in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, seemingly completing the love story of Indy and Marion on a high note, one question that has never been truly addressed is what caused the couple to go their separate ways after the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark. At least until now.

The new Indiana Jones video game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, has now finally given fans the missing pieces to a puzzle that has remained unsolved for over four decades. While the movies have skimmed over the details of the relationship breakdown – mainly because Temple of Doom was a prequel and by the time it needed to be addressed, the moment had passed– the new game’s placement in 1937 sets it just a year after the events of Raiders, and adds a new chapter to Indy’s history, even though the film is not strictly canon according to Lucasfilm.

While audiences first discovered that Marion left Indy when secretly pregnant with their son in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Great Circle makes it clear that their separation was caused by Indy’s inability to break away from his globetrotting ways. The game includes the revelation that Indy left Marion abruptly for his latest adventure in Egypt, which seems to have been a spur of the moment decision to get away from his problems at home. During his months away, Indy left friend Marcus Brody answering calls from Marion, and it is clear that in the end, Marion gave up on the situation and left Indy.

Indiana Jones’ Relationship with Marion is at the Heart of the Franchise

The relationship between Indy and Marion did not begin with Raiders of the Lost Ark. The pair, canonically, actually met more than a decade before the events of the movie. Possibly as a sign of what was to come, they parted ways when Indy chose to pursue his archeology career instead. After reuniting and getting married in Raiders, the pair seemingly had a tumultuous relationship, which by the time of Dial of Destiny had become even more fractured following the death of their son during the Vietnam War.

Dial of Destiny showed a dark side of the pair’s relationship, with the revelation of Indy turning to alcohol after blaming himself for Mutt’s death and Marion deciding that she couldn’t watch him go down that route. The couple is in the midst of a divorce at the start of the film, but the finale brought back Allen to make a very small, but meaningful appearance, to leave audiences with the belief that the pair are going to see through their relationship to the end.
