Open for business – it’s farmers market season
CARTHAGE, New York (WWNY) – Farmers markets in several north country communities are opening this weekend. Among them, the Carthage market on North Mechanic Street, which had its first day Friday.
Stephanie Clemons was among the shoppers going from stand to stand, covering all her bases.
“They work at this all week long, to come for Friday. Seeing them happy, makes me happy,” she said.
Bruce Johnson, owner of Martin Road North Gardens, said it means a lot to small businesses like his when people come to shop.
“A $100 sale to me is a big deal. A $100 sale at a big-box store is nothing,” he said.
There’s a good way to keep track of farmers markets. Cornell Cooperative Extension has issued its annual local food guide for Jefferson County, with a list of all the farmers markets this summer.
“Shopping local keeps things local, which helps our local economy, which is what we need in this day in age right now. There’s businesses that are struggling locally,” said Tina Lanier, president of the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce.
“We’re here until September 27, so every Friday,” she said. ”Come in every week, you never know who’s going to be here.”
