OpenAI Introduces Canvas, A New Way to Collaborate and Iterate with ChatGPT

You can now collaborate with ChatGPT in a whole new way, thanks to a new feature that OpenAI launched today called Canvas. It’s a new interface that opens up alongside your regular chat window, giving you a dedicated space for tackling more complex writing and coding projects.

With Canvas, you’re no longer limited to back-and-forth conversations. You can generate content directly in the workspace and then highlight specific sections for AI-assisted editing. This addresses a common frustration with chatbots – their difficulty handling large, multi-step tasks. Now, you can refine AI-generated content without having to start from scratch, making your creative process much smoother.

If you’re a ChatGPT Plus or Teams user, you’ll get access to Canvas starting today. Enterprise and Education users will get access next week. OpenAI says it plans to make Canvas available to all free users once it’s out of beta.

Canvas’ interface is very intuitive. It includes shortcuts for frequently used actions to boost productivity. For example, writers will see tools to request edits, adjust text length, and add final polish to your work. Coders, you’ll appreciate features like code review, bug fixing, and the ability to port your code to different languages.

Behind the scenes, OpenAI says it trained its GPT-4 model to act more like a collaborative partner for Canvas. They focused on making sure it knows when to open the canvas, how to make targeted edits, and how to provide helpful inline feedback.

This release is part of a broader trend in AI to make the technology more usable. Companies like Anthropic and Cursor have introduced similar editable workspaces.
