ORED petition seeks to force vote on ordinance approving Norman Entertainment district

Oklahomans for Responsible Economic Development (ORED) are holding a 30-day petition drive to force a citywide vote on the ordinance that approved the Rock Creek Entertainment District.

The Norman City Council passed the ordinanceon Sept. 17 in a 5-4 vote, which created a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district and includes a debt obligation of up to $600 million.

ORED said Norman residents objected to the ordinance’s approval, which avoided a citywide vote on the debt obligation.

The petition has 30 days to collect 6,098 signatures to force a citywide vote.

The results will be announced on Oct. 17 at 11:30 a.m.

If the threshold is met, the vote will happen on Feb. 11, 2025, on the same day the Norman mayor and odd-numbered city council ward seats are up for a vote.
