DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – The Q Casino has changed a lot since it began in 1985 as a greyhound racing track. Now, things like slot machines are a more common sight. Today, it’s in the process of a massive 10-year plan for Chaplain Schmidt Island, with a 75 million-dollar redevelopment.

“We’re just really proud of how this is coming together to bring a great new experience for our to Dubuque guests,” said Q Casino & Resort President & Ceo Alex Dixon. “Throughout the region, people have been flocking here, particularly on the weekends, when we’ve got our Great Back Water concerts… It’s just been a phenomenal experience.”

That includes new entertainment focused on families and an outdoor concert space.

“We sit on 228 acres of land in the middle of the Mississippi River, and so for a very long time we’ve separated families in one part gaming, and then everyone else stays away. But now as we think about the opportunity to welcome people to the river, we want to be able to welcome the entire family, whether it’s Grandma and Grandpa, whether you’re coming with RVs, you’re coming for the Field of Dreams, or if you’re just here local and you want to a great place to have recreation. We believe that it’s really important to welcome the entire family and have age-appropriate activities for everyone who comes to either to visit our region or live here already,” Dixon said. “We couldn’t be more excited about how we can deliver a great well-rounded resort experience right here in the Midwest.”

In April, the casino broke ground on a new hotel. It’s set to open next fall.
