Out There With 12 Sports: Wichita Fencing Academy

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – While fencing is one of the oldest sports on display at the 2024 Summer Olympics, it also has a presence that dates back multiple decades in Wichita.

The Wichita Fencing Academy has been the home for many competitors and training since the late 1980s. Fencing is the combat sport of sword fighting with three different disciplines using different blades and varying rules. The idea is to connect the sword with your opponent, wearing protective covering, to earn points. The swords have electric buttons on the end to keep score electronically.

“The great part about fencing and what makes it a challenging sport is it is mental chess. I’m trying to provoke my opponent to do a thing or think i’m going to do something else,” said Court Dyke of the Wichita Fencing Academy.
