Pat McAfee makes controversial and profane statement while standing up for Caitlin Clark

ESPN talk show host Pat McAfee has built a reputation as someone who’s not afraid to air controversial opinions. However, the opinions he expressed to open Monday’s show may have been a little too over-the-top, even for his brand.

McAfee went on an extended riff about the WNBA and rookie star Caitlin Clark that was also posted on his social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In an attempt to praise Clark, McAfee used profanity and racial undertones to criticize referees for not protecting Clark from overaggressive opponents and the media for how it has covered the WNBA’s “rookie class.”

“I would like the media people that continue to say, ‘This rookie class, this rookie class, this rookie class’. Nah, just call it for what it is – there’s one (expletive) for the Indiana team who is a superstar,” McAfee said.

When contacted by USA TODAY Sports, an ESPN spokesperson declined comment.

“What the WNBA currently has is what we like to describe as a cash cow. There is a superstar,” McAfee said before the comments. “And we’re not saying that the players on the court need to act any differently. That’s the athletes are going to do what the athletes are going to do in any sport. I think we’re all learning, that the WNBA … that’s old-school football, baby.”
