People react to holiday shopping at Summit Mall

With Christmas less than 10 days away people are continuing to make trips to different malls and shops to find gifts for friends and family.

Despite the cold wet weather, they are still running around the mall checking off Christmas gifts and having some fun while doing it.

“We got some stuff for my mom and my sister found this hand,” said shopper Jenna Hale. “I bought my sister a candle right in front of her and then we found a duck that she was going to buy for me but then we decided against the mallards.”

For one man, he’s keeping it simple and just getting gift cards.

“It makes it easy to buy gift cards for your families,” said shopper Don. “They don’t return it. You don’t have to worry about ‘oh gee that’s nice, but I wish I had something else.’ They want gift cards to different stores and it’s an easy way to shop, especially for someone who’s pushing 80 and does not like to shop.”

During Thanksgiving weekend and Cyber-Monday nearly 1.9 million shoppers in Nevada spent over $444 million on Christmas gifts. But some people say they prefer to shop in-person at places like the Summit Mall where all the stores are in one place, and they can spend time with friends or family while doing so.

Tracy, with her friend Elsa, says, “We’re heading to Victoria’s Secret next and probably Starbucks after that.”

“There’s other shops around,” said Hale. “We have to go to Lululemon as well and she wants Starbucks.”

“And we’re seeing wicked,” her sister adds.

“Yeah, we’re going to see wicked,” Hale responds.

Regardless of the amount of money spent or types of gifts, shoppers are saying the most meaningful part of Christmas is spending time together.

Tracy says, “Presents are fun but it’s really getting together for the holidays with family and friends. It’s really important. That’s the main thing.”

Don says, “For those who come from out of town we get to hear their stories and find out what people are doing. Family is the most important thing.”
