Pigeon Falls World War Two veteran is inducted into the Tomah VA Hall of Heroes

TOMAH, Wis. (WEAU) – 107-year-old Reynolds Tomter served in World War Two as a Merchant Marine member. He took five Atlantic crossings as the ship’s baker and backup gunner.

“I spent my entire time on the Atlantic and the Mediterranean,” says Tomter.

Now he is being honored with a plaque for the Tomah VA Hall of Heroes. One veteran is selected each year for their service.

“They’re selected for their courageous service in the military, their honor to have served, and on their community service and what they have contributed to their community and their profession,” says Tomah VA public affairs officer Christie Clark.

After serving, Tomter has done plenty for the community of Pigeon Falls, including serving on the fire department and becoming a charter member of the Pigeon Falls Lions Club. Tomter says he is excited to receive this honor of being on the Hall of Heroes.

“I’ve been sitting on top of pedestal, after pedestal. I was one of the guys involved in war and I’m being glorified for being at this age at 107 because I am the oldest in the Merchant Marines right now. This is one of my glory events,” says Tomter.

While Tomter says he may not be a hero, the Tomah VA disagrees. They say they love Tomter’s story and his ability to tell it. Now it will be up on the wall for all to see.

“It’s just a reminder to all of us of what veterans have sacrificed. Their plaque hanging in that Hall of Heroes is a reminder of what they gave for our freedoms,” says Clark.

Tomter also traveled to Europe earlier this year as part of the 80th anniversary of D-Day. He also has laid the wreath on the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier.
